How the new Elder Scrolls Online Antiquities System works

If you’ve been playing Greymoor recently, the new Elder Scrolls Online expansion, you may be familiar with the new Antiquities system. While certainly helpful, the new system can be a little confusing at first, so we are here to clear some things up. In this guide, we will give you a detailed rundown of how to level Antiquities in Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor, as well as a brief overview of how the new system works.

How do I get started?

To start off this new adventure into Tamriel’s hidden history, you’ll have to visit the Antiquarians’ Circle in Solitude. It’s right next to the Bards College. You’ll want to speak to Verida Numida, which in turn will give you the Antiquarian’s Eye tool, a tutorial quest, and some leads.

I strongly advise you to do both quests, so that you fully understand how everything works. That way, once you’re done with the first quest, you can do your own excavations, without needing any help. According to one of the game’s senior systems designers, Michael Schroeder, the idea was to create an activity like no other in the game, one that would make players want to revisit all places in Tamriel. And in my own opinion, they did just that!

So, this game is divided into two very unique minigames: Scrying and Excavation. In Scrying, you will have to use special tools to find hidden items. And then in Excavation you actually dig up the things you find. We’re not talking of old bones and rusty gear, we’re talking collectibles, valuable treasure and very powerful mythic stuff.

The minigames are very short and entertaining and, quite honestly, perfectly scratch my childish dream of being an archaeologist. However, Scrying and Excavations aren’t the only interesting thing about this new system. I’ve always enjoyed the franchise’s storylines, and this system has quite an interesting one. I mean, players get to discover about old cultural practices and even races that went extinct a long time ago.

Which zones have antiquities?

Almost all of them! With the release of the new system, Western Skyrim and nearly all of ESO’s previous base game, Chapter, and DLC zones (including some you might not expect) have antiquities for you to locate and dig up. Note that the regions of Cyrodiil, Imperial City, and Blackreach will not have antiquities at this time (although you might be able to find leads there). In the future, we plan to add additional antiquities to all new zone releases.

How to Unlock Antiquities

If you’re a bit confused about Antiquities, don’t worry, we’re here to clear some things up! Essentially, the new Antiquities system allows players to scry and excavate hidden treasures throughout the land of Skyrim. The system introduces two new skills, scrying and excavation.

To unlock the Antiquities system, you’ll need to visit the city Solitude in Western Skyrim. Specifically, you’ll need to track down a woman by the name of Verita Numida. You’ll find her inside a building on the east side of Solitude. Speak with her and she will give you the Antiquarian’s Eye tool and will have you complete a quest for her that will show you how to use your new tool.
